No two removal firms will give you the same figure for what looks like the same job, and that’s not because someone’s trying to catch you out. A quote for a house move is built from the specifics of that move: what’s in the property, how easy it is to get a van near the front door, how far you’re going, and whether you need help packing as well as moving. Ask for a number before any of that’s known and you’re really asking for a guess. Ask for a proper quote and you get something worked out for your home.

Volume: how much you’re moving
The biggest single factor in any quote is how much there is to shift and how it’s packed away. A one-bedroom flat with a few boxes and flat-pack furniture is a different job to a four-bedroom house with a garage, a shed and a loft that hasn’t been cleared in a decade. Volume decides how many hours the job takes and how much space it needs in the van, so it’s the first thing worth being honest with yourself about before you get a quote.
Access at both properties
Where the van can park matters as much as what’s in the house. A drive right outside the front door is a different job to a flat up two flights of stairs with no lift, or a terrace on a narrow street where the van has to stop some way off and everything gets carried the rest of the distance by hand. The same goes for the property you’re moving into. Stairs, narrow doorways, awkward corners and the distance between the van and your front door all add time, and time is a real cost driver.
Distance between the two addresses
A move across town and a move across the country use the same care, but they don’t take the same time or fuel. We quote for moves across Lancashire, Greater Manchester and the North West, and we also take on genuine long-distance jobs, including removals into Scotland. Distance is one of the more straightforward things to account for in a quote, but it still needs to be looked at properly rather than guessed from a postcode.
Packing
Some people pack everything themselves and just need the van and the labour. Others want the whole job done, room by room, so all they have to do on moving day is answer the door. When we’re asked to pack, that’s included in the price rather than charged separately, we reuse boxes where we can, and everything is protected properly for the journey, whether that’s a wardrobe of clothes or a box of glassware. How much packing you want us to take on is one of the biggest variables in a quote, so it’s worth deciding early.

Storage in between
House moves don’t always line up neatly. If your sale completes before your new place is ready, or there’s a gap between the two, you need somewhere for your things to go that isn’t the back of a van. Our managed storage covers exactly that: we collect what needs storing, keep it, and bring it back out when your dates are sorted, so you’re not left arranging storage space yourself. If a gap between addresses looks likely, it’s worth mentioning at quote stage so it can be built into the price rather than sorted out at the last minute.
Timing: weekends, month end and short notice
Removals firms tend to get busier at weekends, around the end of the month and near the end of school terms, simply because that’s when most people move. That demand affects how much choice there is around a date, which is a real part of pricing even if it isn’t the same thing as the size of the job. If your dates have some flexibility, it’s worth saying so when you get in touch.

Getting an accurate quote
The more we know upfront, the closer a quote gets to the final figure. It helps to have a rough idea of the size of the property and what’s in it, whether there’s a lift or stairs at either end, how far the van will need to carry things from the road, and whether your moving date is fixed or has some give in it. If you already know you’ll want help with packing, say so early, because it changes the shape of the job. None of this needs to be exact. A conversation gets us most of the way there.
What to check when comparing quotes
If you’re getting more than one quote, the figures alone don’t tell you much unless you know what’s behind them. Ask what’s actually included: is packing part of the price or extra, and does the quote cover getting everything back out at the other end as well as in? Ask about insurance too. Ours covers goods in transit and in storage, and we regularly move items that need proper care, including antiques, office equipment, mirrors and sentimental pieces, so it matters that they’re covered the whole way. A cheaper-looking number that leaves out packing, or doesn’t say what happens if something’s damaged, isn’t necessarily the better deal.
