Every piano is different, and so is every doorway. An upright can often be moved on a purpose-made trolley once it is wrapped and the castors are protected, while a grand usually comes apart first: the lid, the legs and the pedal lyre come off, and the body travels on its side on a padded board. We look at the route before anything is lifted, including narrow staircases and tight turns on the landing.

Most of a piano’s weight sits low and to one side. Carrying a piano like a wardrobe is how backs and floors get damaged. The strings, the soundboard and the case all take the strain in different ways. Trained upright piano movers and grand piano movers plan the lift around that weight, keep control on the stairs, and pad every point where the piano meets a wall or a banister. It is skilled work, which is why we treat piano moves as a specialism.

How much do piano movers cost?

Piano moves are priced individually rather than against a rate card, because the job depends on the instrument in front of us and the route it has to travel. There is no standard figure we can quote before we know your piano and your two addresses. What sets the price is the type of piano, upright or grand, the access at both ends, the distance between properties, and whether the move is part of a larger house move or a job on its own. A grand down a tight staircase is a different job from an upright through a ground-floor doorway, even over the same distance.
